The engine room is able to accommodate a pair of 1550HP CAT C30 V-12 diesel engines (power option); standard is a pair of 800HP CAT 3406E diesels. Optional twin 1400HP 3412E CATs can cruise at over 30 knots and hit 35+ top speed. Twin 1000HP CAT C18 diesels are another power option. Engine room has huge air plenums with filters and more than sufficient space to do maintenance and access other engine room equipment.

The 149 sq ft cockpit features a 6.5’ long fishbox with macerator, bait and tackle center with sink and bait freezer, raw and freshwater washdowns, chill box under step to salon door and a pair of storage lockers under the port and starboard coamings. Transom fish door isn’t gated purposely to avoid accidental overboards while hauling in a large fish.

Large 150 sq ft flybridge features two Murray Brothers pedestal ladder-back seats positioned aft on the bridge deck for unobstructed views of the cockpit and the water to either side, along with the usual all-around views from a convertible bridge helm. Pod console has single-lever controls for backing down on a fish or docking. An optional retracting electronics module is available, as are a pair of electronic teaser reels mounted overhead in a flush-mount cabinet built into the hardtop above the captain’s seat. Drink box is forward and to port. Cushioned portside seating has storage underneath.

The 54 Convertible is produced in the same legendary Hatteras construction standards of solid fiberglass hull bottom and non-absorbent Divinycell foam core in hull sides, decks, and superstructure for lightweight strength and sound insulation. Engine beds are mounted to steel plates that are fully encapsulated in fiberglass stringers which helps prevent engine vibrations from transferring to the hull for a more comfortable, quieter ride. The large 39x75 7-blade Nibral props and low gear ratio also help reduce vibration. A shallower shaft angle allows a more horizontal propeller thrust that enhances performance and efficiency. Besides prop tunnels, Hatteras uses a 5-step system to protect the bottom.

Building the topsides in three parts that are precisely fitted to the hull, ensures a strong rugged vessel, able to endure the rigors of pursuing trophy gamefish in rough conditions. Handling is silky-smooth with Teleflex hydraulics and a responsive helm in tight turns. The 54C tracks straight and true at a cruise speed of over 42 mph at 2100 rpm.
