Description
Saharet of Tyre is a 114 ft classic wooden ketch, built in 1933 by Camper and Nicholsonâs, to explore the Mediterranean Sea for WK Vanderbilt and Woodbury Parsons, the leading curator and collector of antiquities and art treasures for the leading American museums and galleries of the time.
Her relatively shallow draft of 9â 6âallowed her to enter shallow bays and her canoe shaped hull and ketch rig gave her decent speed and versatility.
During WW2 she became damaged and was abandoned in Italy. She was subsequently acquired by a wealthy Lebanese owner and completely rebuilt during the 1980âs at Manoel Island in Malta where she was strengthened and stiffened to handle heavy weather better, under the direction of Captain Ian Staniland who became her caretaker for the next 35 years, when she was again refitted and repowered at Manoel Island, in 2013. The current owner acquired her in 2020 when she was once again in Malta where the rigging and sails were since been overhauled prior to sailing to the Caribbean where she now lies in superb condition.
