Billy Freeman, an offshore fishing enthusiast, was frustrated by a lack of fishing boats he could afford that could handle the range of weather and sea conditions out of Charleston. He envisioned a boat that could conquer rough seas with the stability and other advantages of a catamaran and assembled a team to pursue his dream. The major disadvantages he found with catamarans are the lack of speed and quirky handling, especially in following seas. Working with Jesse Rhodes of Rhodes Yacht Design, Billy and his team redesigned the catamaran hull from the ground up to transform it into a performance fishing catamaran. His first boat was hand built in his garage in 2007, which led to founding a company, Freeman Boatworks, to fulfill demand for the high-quality custom fishing boats. The first redesigned catamaran was tested in Venice, Louisiana by a charter fishing company known to be hard on boats, that put the original Freeman 33 through its paces in the Gulf—and they loved it!
