History of Chris-Craft Boats
Christopher Columbus Smith built his first boat in 1874 in Algonac, Michigan at the age of 13. His boats were referred to as “punts” or “skiffs” and quickly earned him a reputation as a master boat builder. As demand for Chris’ boats grew, he joined with his brother (Hank) and began making boats full-time. They formed the Smith Ryan Boat Company in 1910 and focused on building fast, reasonably priced runabout boats. In 1922 they changed the name to Chris Smith and Sons Boat Company. In 1927, Chris’ son, Jay Smith, became President and General Manager of Chris-Craft. Under Jay’s leadership, Chris-Craft became known as the world’s largest builder of mahogany powerboats. After the depression in the 30’s Chris-Craft focused again on building runabouts. During the war, Chris-Craft began building patrol boats for the US Navy and Army. By 1945, Chris-Craft had built 12,000 military vessels. In the early 50’s, Chris-Craft expanded its lineup to include 139 powerboat models. It 1955 they manufactured their first fiberglass boat. In 1971, Chris-Craft built their last mahogany boat, the 57’ Constellation. In 2001, Chris-Craft was purchased by an investment group and continue to grow. Chris-Craft Headquarters are in Sarasota, Florida. Chris-Craft uses the highest quality marine vinyl and custom fabrics for the interiors of the boats they make.
